Second seminar in a series of seminars on children without, or at risk of losing, parental care.
In this series of seven seminars over the coming 1½ year, we invite organizations engaged in international development to discuss and learn more about issues related to child protection and children living in alternative care. You are most welcome to participate no matter if you represent a small NGO, are a volunteer, work in research or come from a large international NGO.
In December 2019, the UN Resolution of the Promotion and protection of the rights of children specifically focused, for the first time ever, on children without parental care in recognition of the vulnerability of this group of children. The purpose of these seminars is to explore how to use the Resolution and the UN Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children, in order to safeguard and promote the rights of children who have lost, or are at risk of losing, parental care. The seminars offer expert presentations on topics related to the Resolution and an opportunity to discuss and share experiences to learn from promising practices and improve the protection and the quality of alternative care.
The objectives of the seminar is to:
1) Increase knowledge on how to work with a rights-based approach to protect children from, and put an end to, domestic violence through expert presentations and working in groups with concrete examples.
2) Share ideas and successful practices among us on how to address the issues of domestic violence and how it affects children.
3) Discuss how to work within different cultural settings and with consideration for gender differences.

Seminar 2) Domestic violence The 2019 UN Resolution ‘Promotion and protection of the rights of children’ has a specific focus on prevention of family separation as well as the combatting of all forms of violence against children. There are links between domestic violence and child abuse, neglect and abandonment globally. Furthermore, domestic violence is a significant factor related to children are losing parental care. The causes of violence are multi-faceted and stems from various interlinking individual and situational factors. How different cultures approach these issues are rarely shared. The subject of this seminar is therefore highly relevant for any organization working with a rights-based approach to protect children from, and putting an end to, violence within families and communities both on a national and global level. Among the many side effects of the Covid-19 pandemic emerging data and reports, have shown that domestic violence has particularly intensified, thus increasing the need for exploring preventative strategies and taking even more urgent action.
Dr. Gale will be accompanied by: Dr Annie Donaldson, Honorary Research Fellow at University of Strathclyde and Ram Chandra Paudel, Executive Director, CHILDREN-Nepal.
